Last week saw the completion of the installation of a tribute to Graham Kean, Wealden District Council’s former Engineer and Countryside Officer, in the form of a bench using the wheels from an old railway carriage. This was fabricated by volunteers from the Bluebell Railway, where Graham was an enthusiastic volunteer. The bench was welded onto steel rails by Thorne staff for stabilisation purposes – thanks to Dom & Andy for this – and delivered and installed on the Cuckoo Trail near Hellingly by the two Jakes.
Graham was an old-school engineer with a steely determination to get things done, and Thorne had the pleasure of working with him on many projects during his 38 years with the Council, with highlights being the refurbishment of the Birling Gap staircase and upgrades to the Cuckoo Trail. Hopefully, many who knew him will be able to take the opportunity to visit the site and spend a moment sitting on the bench, remembering an old friend.
