We’re proud to announce that we have received another prestigious award, this time, at the 2019 Uckfield FM Community Awards, where we were presented with the award entitled ‘Give Back to the Community’ on Friday 8th November. Having been active in supporting the community for many years, it is wonderful to receive recognition for this. We have provided the Christmas Tree for Uckfield since 1951 in addition to the lorry to transport it to its place by Nat West Bank. We provide trucks for various community groups to decorate for the Uckfield Carnival. We have been active in sponsoring such things as the Uckfield Business Awards, local charities, am-dram organisations and Uckfield Rugby Football Club. As a local family business that has gone from strength to strength over the past 8 decades, these things are just our way of giving back, so thank you to all the Thorne employees who are a part of this vibrant team effort.
On the evening of 27th September, 2019, CJ Thorne & Co became the winner of three prestigious awards across two separate events!
• WINNER of Best Construction Project Award – South East Construction Awards 2019
• WINNER of Outstanding Team of the Year Award – East Sussex Business Awards 2019
• WINNER of Overall Business of the Year Award – East Sussex Business Awards 2019
We can’t stop smiling! Thank you to the judging panels for recognising our achievements, and special thanks to the amazing workforce at CJ Thorne & Co… It may sound like a cliché but it really has been a team effort. What a fantastic way for us to collectively celebrate our 80 years in the industry.
On Saturday evening CJ Thorne and Co were proud sponsors of one of the races at Hove Greyhound Stadium, in celebration of our 80th year in the Civil Engineering industry. Pictured are some of the staff, posing with Truffles, the race winner.
Huge thanks to the team of CJ Thorne staff and their families who volunteered, at the weekend, to participate in the 2019 Great British Beach Clean, organised by the Marine Conservation Society. The lovely weather was a great help, down on Seaford Beach, but ultimately, whatever the weather had in store, the Thorne volunteers were ready to roll up their sleeves, as a business from the local community, and take a share in the responsibility to help look after our environment. Associate Director Alan Skipper said “We were pleasantly surprised to find the beach in a clean condition. It was refreshing to learn that the local community regularly volunteer their time to keep the beach clean! But still our efforts collected 2 bags of rubbish which included the normal culprits of small plastics, cigarette butts and fishing lines.” It’s a timely reminder for us all to take our rubbish home and recycle it!
If you happen to visit our stand at the South East Construction Expo on Thursday 26th September you could win a lovely prize! All you have to do is drop off your business card and you will automatically be entered in the draw to win a luxurious Fortnum & Mason hamper! So, come and see us on Stand 120 for a catch up anytime between 9am and 4pm. It’s a business-to-business event, dedicated to the construction sector, bringing together clients, contractors, buyers, consultants and developers, so there are plenty of interesting things to see and do on the day, aside from, of course, chatting to us! C J Thorne & Co’s £1.8m Bayham Spillway project has been short-listed in Best Construction Project category at next month’s South East Construction Awards. The project involved the construction of a new 10m wide reinforced concrete spillway on the northern end of the embankment impounding Bayham Lake in Kent, as well as downstream spillway channel, including a new reinforced concrete access road bridge spanning the spillway.
Managing Director Chris Thorne said: “We are delighted to have been short-listed for this prestigious award, which is due recognition for an outstanding civil engineering project. Congratulations to Jim, Guy, Danny and all involved.”
Congratulations to Sidney Goodman, who last week completed 40 years with C J Thorne & Co., joining an elite band of 7 staff to have reached that milestone during the Company’s 80 year history. Sid joined Directors and colleagues at the pub to celebrate the event and was presented with an original newspaper from the day that he joined the Company.
Work was completed on Friday morning to replenish the shingle on the naturist beach in Brighton ahead of a busy “Pride” weekend. The project was part of our Coastal Defences Framework Contract for Brighton & Hove City Council, and involved movement of shingle to form a berm at the top of the beach that gives some privacy to users of the naturist facility.
Warm congratulations to our Quantity Surveyor, Ashley and his beautiful bride, Charlotte. They tied the knot yesterday on the most perfect day for a summer wedding, which is quite a coincidence as they make the most perfect couple! We wish them every happiness. xx
The £180k project to construct a replacement 2.4m wide reinforced concrete spillway to relieve the embankment impounding a privately owned fishing pond in Surrey is nearing completion. The project also involved the construction of a permanent berm along the downstream side of the existing 3m high dam, along with associated tree works and temporary road construction to provide access to the site. Credit to Vic and the team for an excellent job in a challenging environment.
