Work has been completed on the repair work to the stairs at Birling Gap, near Eastbourne, after they were damaged by a significant rockfall caused by Storm Chandra at the end of January.
The work involved the removal of the lower staircase, which had been crushed, and manufacture and installation of a replacement bottom flight of stairs, as well as a steel brace to strengthen the main stair tower and some other minor repairs to damaged steelwork.
To have completed the structural assessment, design, steel fabrication and installation in less than 12 weeks since the rock fall is testament to the outstanding collaboration between our client, Wealden District Council, designer Monson Engineering Ltd, steel fabricator ARCFAB LLC and of course Guy Davidson and his team for delivering the scheme safely and ahead of programme, allowing the steps to re-open in good time for the May bank holiday.
