We are nearing completion on the additional car park area at #ScotneyCastle for the #NationalTrust, part of a number of improvements being undertaken at the property including a power upgrade and extensive footpath resurfacing and surface dressing, all of which has been carried out by Thorne.
With the lake cut-off piles completed, work continues on the construction of the new spillway at Bayham, close to the ruins of the old Abbey. The works form part of a £1.4m flood defense improvements project for the impounded lake, and include a new reinforced concrete road bridge over the spillway, as well as refurbishment of the listed grotto just east of the lake.
Thorne has returned to Uckfield WwTW, the scene of one of its largest projects of the 20th Century, to work on the latest extension to the treatment works. Our £2m scope includes the civils operations associated with a power upgrade to the site, new Ferric and Alkalinity Dosing systems, Deep Bed Sand Filters, Pumping Stations, all associated pipework and ducting as well as modifications to existing assets to accommodate the improvements to the treatment process.
The infrastructure works started this week for Eastbourne Borough Council’s Iconic Beach Huts, five of which will be sited at intervals along Eastbourne seafront. The five designs were chosen from competition entries and planning was approved by Eastbourne’s planning committee in 2016 – Thorne won the contract for the civils works earlier this year.
Work is complete on the installation of new oak boards around the Mansion paths at Scotney Castle – careful working was required to protect the rare orchids that grow in the surrounding grass, which must not be walked on.

Our Capital Investment programme for 2017 is well underway with the arrival on site at Beauport of our new Road Sweeper – an essential part of the armoury in keeping the site clean and tidy during the earthworks stage of the project and throughout the deep pipework excavations. More new plant coming soon!
Work is progressing well on the demolition and reconstruction of the parapet wall on East St Groyne in Brighton as part of our 4 year term contract for Coastal Defences and Structures Maintenance for Brighton & Hove City Council.
Work is nearing completion on the installation of the sheet piles for the cofferdam for the GAC and Clean Washwater Pumping Stations. This forms part of the £1.6m civils contract to upgrade the existing works at Beauport WTW, Hastings.
Work is nearing completion on the new sewage treatment system at Chartwell. The photo shows the delicate excavation around the perimeter of the rose garden wall – built by Winston Churchill himself – to allow the installation of the discharge pipework.
