The surface and level of Run Common Road had deteriorated over time due to settlement in the embankment as it rose towards a disused railway bridge. The settlement was caused by badgers burrowing into the embankment, and once they had been temporarily re-homed, the project scope was to reconstruct the road and embankment.
This involved the construction of a 5m-9m cantilevered sheet piled walls on both sides of the carriageway on the approaches to the bridge, to ensure that any burrowing animals would not further undermine the road. The embankments were then reconstructed with compacted layers of 6F5 in place of the failed material.
The sheet-piled walls were completed with in-situ reinforced concrete capping beams and an updated Vehicle Restraint System, and the road was resurfaced to Surrey Highways specification.
