Sector:Earthworks and Landscaping
Client:South Downs National Park Authority
Year of Project:2023
Project Value:£81,000
Duration:8 weeks

This objective of the project was to create wetland basins and a pond in a fenced section of the school playing field, both to enhance the environment and to create an educational space for the school.

The project coordinators also worked closely with Brighton & Hove City Council to alleviate a drainage problem from the road above the site, and in doing so provided a natural water supply for the wetland area. The works involved:

  • Excavation of an infiltration basin to allow surplus surface water to filter through the chalky soil.
  • Excavation of a wet basin and construction of a dipping pond.
  • Construction of a dipping / viewing platform for education purposes.
  • Excavation of a swale to connect to the inlet works from the road.
  • Construction of road inlet works and connecting pipework / headwall.
  • Use of surplus excavated material to form raised banks and landscape locally.
