The objective of the project was to alleviate a weight restriction which had been imposed after previous structural inspections, and involved the following:
- Installation of a prefabricated steel propping system with shop applied corrosion protection system
- Connections between steel header beam and concrete roadway soffit
- Post-installed anchor connections between steel props and caisson lids
- Concrete repairs including:
- Removal of loose or spalling from the roadway soffit.
- Cleaning of exposed reinforcement.
- Replacement of defective reinforcement to lap into existing.
- Installation of cementitious repair mortar to original profile.
Working in this environment was challenging, with adverse weather often resulting in waves overtopping the breakwater, so access was planned from both land and water to always allow continuity and ensure the project was completed on programme.
