The construction of a new 10m wide reinforced concrete spillway on the northern end of the embankment impounding Bayham Lake, as well as downstream spillway channel, including a new reinforced concrete access road bridge spanning the spillway. This was a requirement under the Reservoirs Act 1975 as the lake had been identified in a recent inspection as a Flood Category A with the potential to affect lives in the community in the event of a breach. The project also involved extensive remedial works to the existing spillway, and necessitated carefully planned traffic management including the installation of a temporary bridge to maintain access at all times.
Quality was maintained throughout with all relevant document control, design checks, temporary works inspections, construction hold points and inspection and testing diligently undertaken. The project planning was necessarily flexible given the challenges that were encountered, but the approach by all parties to keeping the project on track ensured that no corners were cut and the expected high-quality output was maintained.
This approach was rewarded at the 2019 South East Construction Awards where the Bayham Lake Spillway project won the Best Project Award.
