Work is nearing completion on the first phase of a Design & Build project to allow SES Water improved access to replace and service three 900mm diameter valves in contact tanks on one of their key sites.
This trial project involved the construction of a new upstand beam across the full width of the tank to give additional structural support to the roof, enabling 80% of the work to be completed with the contact tank still in service.
Having completed the RC works outside the contact tank, including the casting of a bespoke RC cover slab on site, the tank was taken out of commission and a 2m x 1.5m access was cut directly above the existing valve. The 3T valve was then lowered through the opening and fixed into position, with the spindle passing through a bespoke steel plate to ensure the tank was sealed.
The pre-cast concrete slab was then lifted onto the upstand walls and the security cage installed, ensuring the contact tank could be put back into service with the shortest possible down-time.
Given the success of the operation, SES Water has given the go-ahead for remainder of the works on the neighbouring contact tank. Well done to all the team involved!
