Founded by Charles James Thorne (pictured left) in 1939, C J Thorne & Co is a third-generation family firm of civil engineering contractors, based in Uckfield. We undertake contracts of up to £5 million throughout East and West Sussex, Kent and Surrey, with projects for the region’s water companies accounting for much of our work.

With an impressive track record, including a number of prestigious industry awards, we are highly experienced Principal Contractors, fully compliant under the CDM 1994 regulations. The company has a wealth of experience of all aspects of civil engineering, which, together with a non-confrontational approach and commitment to applying best practice, has gained it an outstanding reputation for reliability, service and value for money.

Through our continued growth and diversification, we have remained very much a family firm, and the longevity of service of our 65 permanent staff is a key factor in maintaining the teamwork ethos on which our success depends. However, we are always looking forward and invest heavily in training and development, with particular emphasis on Health & Safety training for every member of our team.

Our wholly-owned plant and transport fleet is maintained in-house in our fully equipped workshops, and we can call on additional resources where necessary through long-standing partnerships with trusted suppliers and specialist contractors.
